We are seeking applicants from the states of Maine, Michigan, Washington, Texas, New York, and Illinois.

Details

  • Who should attend: Participants from the states of Maine, Michigan, Washington, Texas, New York, or Illinois interested in expanding their community building, organizing, and leadership skills, learning about congressional advocacy, and impacting federal migration policy.
  • What to expect: A gathering of movement builders focused on learning and lobbying for humane, sustainable migration management programs.
  • Location: Friends Place on Capitol Hill, FCNL’s Quaker guesthouse and learning center, located 5 short blocks from the U.S. Capitol.
  • What you’ll leave with: Lasting connections, deeper knowledge of migration justice, tangible next steps for continuing organizing in your home communities.

  • Check-in: Sunday, Oct. 15, at 12:00 p.m. EST
  • Learning & Community Building: Oct. 15-16
    • Explore connections between federal migration policy and local community. efforts to provide a safe, dignified welcome to migrants and asylum seekers
    • Train with experts on migration policy and the federal budget and appropriations process. Learn persuasive communication, media, and organizing techniques.
    • Meet organizers from across the country, build community, and exchange ideas.
  • Lobbying & Action Planning: Oct. 17
    • Lobby representatives from Maine, Michigan, Washington, and Texas
    • Strategize with fellow attendees on future campaign planning

The United States suffers from a migration management crisis—Not a migration crisis. It’s time for lawmakers to shift their approach and provide support and trauma-informed care for those seeking safety and navigating our complex immigration system.

Cost to Attend

All options include overnight lodging, 8 meals, and programming. If none of these options feel appropriate for you, please contact our staff. Additional assistance to cover the cost of travel is available. No payment is required at the time of application.

  • Sustainer: $400+ – For those coming with support from an organization or who would like to cover a portion of the cost of attendance for someone with financial need.
  • Individual: $300 – For those traveling without support from an organization who are able to cover the cost of attendance, including lodging, meals, and programming.
  • Movement Builder: <$300 – For those for whom financial support is needed to make this event accessible.

Hosting Organizations

Friends Place: Friends Place is a Quaker guesthouse and learning center that offers affordable group lodging, gathering space, and civic engagement programming just blocks from the nation’s Capitol.  More recently, Friends Place began welcoming families seeking asylum to stay for a few nights at a time as they awaited longer-term resettlement as part of Washington, D.C’s Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid network.
